Come Clean & Leave Your Sins

Wow, Proverbs 28:13 really comes to alive in the Message translation, "You can’t whitewash your sins and get by with it; you find mercy by admitting and leaving them."

First of all, if we as humans in sinful flesh were able to wash up or clean our sins there would have been no need for a savior. Back from the very beginning of the garden of Eden sin entered the world. In case there is any confusion of thinking we are not sinners, Romans 3:23 tells us otherwise.

"Since we’ve compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us,"

Unfortunately, we have been born with a sin nature but thank God for His grace. As we read on we see:

"24 God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.25 God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin. Having faith in him sets us in the clear. God decided on this course of action in full view of the public—to set the world in the clear with himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, finally taking care of the sins he had so patiently endured." (The Message)

So with knowing all of this it is crazy to think that we are free of sin or that we cleanse our own sins. 1 John 1:8 says if we believe we are clear of sin in our lives then we are making a fool out of ourselves. God knows we are going to miss it at times, but He does not desire for us to live in sin. This is why it is so important to implement our spiritual bar of soap, 1John 1:9 - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (KJV) Confession is so key. How can you solve a problem until you have confessed that you have it? As you continue to read, the scripture says, "If we claim that we’ve never sinned, we out-and-out contradict God—make a liar out of him. A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God." (1 John 1:10, MSG)

So as believers we must confess our sins to God and embrace His grace and mercy. But after confession, we must be willing to leave that sin that causes separation between us in God. We must be willing to get rid of things that disgust God and grief His Holy Spirit. There's a beautiful story of Jesus' grace and mercy in the 8th chapter of John. An adulteress is about to be condemned by the Pharisees. The Pharisees questioned Jesus on what to do to the woman. Jesus stooped down in the ground and begin to write with His finger. Once He got up, He asked for those who were without sin to cast the first stone. No stones were thrown at the woman. The beauty is in the end of this story when Jesus told the woman that He didn't condemn her. He instructs her to "go and sin no more" (John 8:11, KJV).

This is still so very relevant, Jesus is still showing the same compassion to us in these current times. All He asks is for us to do is to come clean, confess your sins, and leave your sins. And once you do that He's willing to forgive you, to set you back on the right track.
