You know what this verse says between the lines? Doing good does not usually have an immediate payoff.

Oh, sure... You can get the warm fuzzy from it - your reward to yourself - but to see the real benefit, the Godly reward, you need patience. That's because God works on a different economy than us. No matter how hard we try, there's always going to be a selfish motive behind the overwhelming majority of our good deeds - so we either get our warm fuzzy for being selfless, or we don't see anything.

That's not intentional on God's part, it's a matter of perspective: If we had the same heartbeat as Him, then this verse would not have been written! But we must always be reminded that everything we do should be motivated by God and His will only.

Then we lose sight of ourselves, and are able to do things God's way, and experience the real benefits of doing good.
