God is my Father
As a child I was blessed to have a father that desired great thing from me. He wanted me to be greater than he and I knew it. He bought me everything I wanted. He was never satisfied with my performance at school and pushed me to do better. He wanted good things for me and even though his perspective was skewed, just as any earthly fathers would be, he did the best he knew for me and my siblings. The analogous relationship of Father and Son used to describe two of the roles God plays is masterful. It’s easy to understand because it is so familiar to the human experience.
Our fathers are given the responsibility of providing, protecting, and nurturing us. Even for those who grew up without a father, the role is engrained into our hearts, deep down they knew they were missing that component. Many even grew extremely angry and bitter because of the missing relationship. John uses this analogy and provides great encouragement to the believer in Christ. He says God gives His children everything they ask for just as my father did for me. Only as a heavenly Father, He will only give me that which would be helpful in my development into Christ likeness.
Daddy, thank you so much for being infinitely wise and good to no fault. You know how to meet my needs and you know what and what not to give me. Even when I don’t know what’s good for me, you have a way of giving and withholding is such a way my faith is cultivated. You are the good father. Amen!
