God's Welfare System
God is always looking out for the poor. But his welfare system still allows the poor to maintain their dignity. Farmers, which was just about everyone in those days, were told not to completely glean the fields during harvest but to leave some remnants for the poor.
These were not free handouts. The poor would still have to work by gleaning the remainder of the harvest from the fields. As Christians we should have the same attitude as God toward the poor. Doing whatever we can to help them rise above their situation, and finding creative ways for them to keep their dignity by working for their food.
Free handouts are not the solution. In the end they only promote poverty. AS the saying goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. (or something like that)
