In this portion of Joshua, we see God and His faithfulness once again. God gave Israel the entire land that He had solemnly vowed to their ancestors. Out of their obedience, the people of Israel were able to be in place to receive what God had for them. They were able to take possession and make themselves at home in it. They realized what they were receiving from God had their name all on it and they were able to go in and make it their own. After God showed up big by fulfilling His promises, He gave the people rest. And God made it so that their enemies could not even stand against them. I love how the Message version really breaks down verse 45: "Not one word failed from all the good words God spoke to the house of Israel. Everything came out right".
Even though this happened a few thousands of years ago, God is still yet the same God. God is still going to fulfill the promises that He has given us. He is giving us the grace to go in and possess the land and all that He has in store for us. We just have to be obedient and live lives oriented towards our awesome and sovereign God. He knows which way to take, He knows what's best for us. God has everything under control. And God is still able to give us rest today. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us to come unto to Him when we feel restless or heavy. He is able to show us real rest. He promises us in those scriptures that He won't put more on us then we can bear. The Message version says in verse 30, when we keep company with Jesus we'll learn how to live "freely and lightly".
And with God we are still able to stand against the enemy. Luke 10:19 says, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you.". We have been given all power over the enemy, nothing can even touch us much less hurt us. God is a god who cannot lie, everything He says is true. We must continue to trust in Him and His promises, and everything will come out right. Remember what God promises us in Romans 8:28 - "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them."
Be encouraged and know that your promise from God is about to be fulfilled!
