Hungry

This seems to be the understatement of the century - after fasting forty days and forty nights he was hungry.

Now I am no physician, but I would think that after this length of time your body is all but spent - he must have found water fairly regularly as you can't actually go more than a couple of days without water before you perish.

For me this shows just how physically strong Jesus must have been to start this extended fast - we do not serve a meek and mild Lord. He has strength, and focus, and determination.

Jesus had to experience every thing human - he knows what it is like to have no food in his stomach - it is no wonder then that his passion for the poor is strong. To see those around him without the means for food, must have broken His heart and i am sure it still does.

Satan tempts Jesus with many basic temptations - the desire for physical needs - Jesus was hungry, why should he not use His power to meet his own needs? Simple - we need to rely on God, not our own resources. This is a stab at the very basic of sins - pride. Pride courses through our veins, and it could be argued that pride is the root of sin. After all it is what satan is accused of before he is thrown from heaven. It is what satan used to tempt Eve, it is an awful sin.

Don't trust God he is saying, God doesn't care for you - you had better care for yourself. But Jesus does not fall for this - he has come here for a reason, and a purpose and He is going to see it through.

Lord I pray that i would have your faith, your strength and your drive to say no to the temptations and instead strive ahead to what You have called me into. Forgive me for the times when I have taken matters into my own hands, and then just stuffed things up.
