In our christian lives sometimes we strive to do the least we can in order to be considered a christian. God gave the the Israelites the option to make the vow of a Nazarite when the were in the desert. This was not a new concept when God presented it as an option. While there were many around who were falling into idolatry when Moses was up on Mt. Sinai some chose and asked God how can we become closer to you. Some famous Nazarites were Sampson, Joseph, Jepthah's daughter, Samuel, the Rechabites, John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul. The vow was a Nazarite was a promise to God to sacrifice and willing to be seperated. One of the three conditions that a Nazarite followed was that they would not drink any products from grapes or grape by products. Drinking was a way to dull out the senses and to escape from the problems of this world. Another condition was that they wouldnt bring a razor to their hair. This showed their willingness to feel shame. This was a symbol of the dependence and unkeptness before God. They were continually reminded that they were nothing before God. The third condition was that they would not come into contact with a dead body. This showed a willingness to sacrifice. When a relative or friend died they could not be around to mourn their death. This reminded them of the result of sin, which is death. These principles can also translate over to the New Testament. The call to seperation is an individual choice. Jesus came to Earth and he was seperated from this Earth and asked us to follow Him. Eph. 5 2 Tim 3:2-5 2 Cor 6:14-18 Jude 1:3-4 2 John 1:7-11. The call to shame 1st Corinthians 15:34 The closer you walk with Christ, the more sin wil try to tear you up inside. Sin is no offense to us, its to god. Acts 5:41 The call to sacrifice Are you willing to give up things forgot to have better use of you.
The devil can take anything and make it more important than God to us. Romans 12:1-2 > Holiness is right.
