Trusting His advise

Sometimes I get asked: "What about this commandment? What does God mean by this verse? Is that really a sin?"
There are lots of debates about all kinds of moral issues. Christians try to contextualize parts of God word so it does not apply to us anymore. Although there are some cases where this is okay (eg Leviticus), we have to question our motivation. Do we really trust God? Then we should heed his advise and don't try to debate it all the time.

In Psalm 19:7 David says: "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statues of the Lord are trustworthy, [...], right, [...], radiant." God is perfect, so is His word (or law). Why don't we just trust him and obey like a child?

When I am tempted to do certain things which I know are wrong, I try to just follow God. When God says it's bad, it probably is! The problem is that I often think: Well the Bible says this, but I still want to do it and I don't think it's that bad. By that I place myself higher than God, thinking I know better than him what's good for me.

I don't try to endorse legalism, but to trust God's character and warnings. We would save ourselves a lot of hassle, sorrows and lengthy debates when we start to just believe that there is a blessing in trusting his words, advises and warnings.  In V.7-8 God promises us that the laws

  • ... revive your soul (contemplating over God's word is really reviving and helping a lot in day-to-day situations)
... make you wise (because God's word is so practical, you can use it often and even help others)
... give joy to your heart (in the long run, you're always glad that you followed Him)
... are a light to your eyes (you can tell from someone's countenance if he keeps himself clean or not)
    Aren't these alone encouraging? :)
