The Hebrew phrase literally translates as "the little maiden" not "apple" of your eye. Why?

This goes back to the origin of the phase.

Have you ever been able to look into someone's eyes, especially someone you love, especially someone who loves you, and seen your own reflection? You need to be very very close. Personal boundaries will be ignored.

Keep me as the little maiden of your eye is a plea for intimacy, closeness. A plea for God to come so near that I could see myself in His eyes. Ah, to see myself in His eyes. To see who I am, In His Eyes. His eyes are the window to my soul.
