The Young and the Rest-of-us

One of the best features of YouVersion is the toggle switch for translations. The New King James is quite different from the Message. I love Eugene Peterson; all my life I have read his work and respected his version. I read (first) the NKJV, then go to the Message.

In this psalm, it was a treat. Because the modern language told me that God wraps me in goodness and beauty--that I am perpetually young in His presence. In my mid-40s...that truth brings a smile to my face!

Later on in the song, the NKJV declares the ministers of God blessed. I have always worked and served in the church as a volunteer. The past 3 years, I have worked and served part-time on staff for the church we helped to plant. It's different. (That's another note). At any rate, I turned to the message to see what it had to say about "ministers". There I read that "armies of angels" are blessed and "alert to respond" to what pleases God. Volunteer or paid staffer, I hope I will always be counted in the group 'alert to what pleases God'.

Bless the Lord. Oh, my soul, young and good .  May all that is within me be alert to your pleasure today, God.
