Chasing Freedom
Our world is chasing freedom. Even many Christians aren't experiencing freedom. We're sure chasing it though. We buckle down and pray it up. We dedicate ourselves to a regular Bible reading schedule. We commit to confronting strangers about their eternal destination. We put money in the church collection plate.
Sadly though, many of our attempts to experience freedom aren't working? It's not that what we're doing is wrong, it's that the things we're doing are not actually done...well...spiritually. We do them for many different reasons, but not for the one reason that matters most: the desire to know Christ.
If ever there was a man with the zeal and fervor to do the work of God, it was Paul. He trained under the religious traditions of the famous Gamaliel. He had envious theological pedigree. He rigorously defended the law. Yet, one day he met Christ (see Acts 9), his life was changed, and he commented on his previous spiritual efforts:
"But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ..."
- Philippians 3:7-8
Paul realized that all his past work that he used to take credit for was now worthless to him. He crystallizes that goal into one thing: the desire to know Christ.
If our activities aren't spiritual, then our activities are worthless.
