My Greatest Desire - My Greatest Need
SCRIPTURE: PSALM 73:23-26, 28
"Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds."
OBSERVATION:
The Psalmist was talking about the dangers of jealousy and envy. He became tranparent as he shared about his struggle with desiring the things that the rich and prideful have. He wanted to live like them. The thought of trading in his life of purity for the wealth of the wicked had entered his mind. "Surely in vain have I kept my pure heart." He was plagued & confused with these thoughts.
But when he entered the presence of God things became clear. The wealth of the wicked is house of cards. It is not real wealth. The lifestyle of the wicked comes crashing down on themselves.
When Asaph entered the presence of God, it became clear that what he really desires is relationship with God. He desired the assurance that only a pure life, lived for God, affords us - the assurance that we find strength, health, and provision, in God alone.
APPLICATION:
When I am feeling a lack in my life I will enter the presence of God. When my desires for stuff begin to plague me, when I begin to want the life that others have, and when I am confused by the prosperity of the wicked, I will enter God's presence. I will allow the Spirit of God to assure me that He is my all in all. I will make him my ultimate desire!
PRAYER:
Father, you have been good to me and my family all the days of my life. You know the fear and the confusion in my heart because of our troubled times. Forgive me for the times that I have to go my own way. The tought being "I would provide better better for myself, than living the life that you have set before me would provide." I am foolish when my eyes and my heart stray from you. I am sorry. Please, just as you did for Asaph, hold my hand, give me counsel, strengthen my heart, and be my portion, as I make you my greatest desire in heaven and on earth. In the mighty name of Jesus - AMEN!
