pick me up and hurl me

i wonder why jonah didn't just say, "here.. let me jump from the ship." if he knew he was the reason for the storm, why did he make the mariners take the action by picking him up and hurling him. why didn't jonah himself just do the work?

sounds so much like my own spiritually lazy self - letting all the others do the work even though i know what needs to be done and i'm the reason for the set-backs.
