What are you filled with?

A friend has encouraged me to read this Psalm often. I have, and it has been a great help. Never underestimate the power of the Word to feed you and give you strength that you can't find anywhere else.

Today, as I read this Psalm for the umpteenth time, I noticed verse nine, which says the Lord "fills the hungry soul with goodness." It struck me suddenly that what's left unsaid is: "If God doesn't fill our souls, we will fill them with something else." And we surely will. We'll stuff our souls with something far inferior. It might be lusts and titillation. It might be thrills or fear of boredom. It might be drugs and alcohol and the avoidance of self-reflection. It might be work and keeping so busy we can avoid the more important but painful issues.

Left to ourselves, we will absolutely stuff our souls with all manner of escape or self-absorption. We have nothing else, nothing better to offer.

The only good food to be found for our souls comes from engaging with our Creator. He will fill us with his goodness. He is the only food that will take us beyond ourselves and into the real sustenance we need.
