Moses Neglects To Circumcise His Son
Here we are reminded that Moses was married with kids, something we often overlook.
Apparently, on the journey to Egypt God gets angry with Moses because Moses neglected to circumcise his son. Some claim that Moses "forgot", but that seems quite unlikely. An intact foreskin isn't something you just accidentally overlook, especially considering how sacred this ritual is to the Jewish people. They would typically have planned a ceremony to mark the occasion of a circumcision.
Moses' wife figures out the problem and does the circumcision herself. Then she touches Moses with the foreskin, perhaps to heal him from a sickness that God had struck him with. Different translations say different places she touched him with it. NIV says his feet; CEV says his legs; The Message says “his member” which sounds oddly slang and crude. We know that the Lord took circumcision very seriously in this time, but it is unclear exactly why this particular circumcision was such a big deal. Likely it was important to God that the new leader of His people be far above reproach.
