On Our Side
Chris Tomlin is one of my favorite artists. He's written a song called, 'On Our Side'. It says simply,
"If God is on our side who can be against us? If God is on our side we won't be afraid. Though the mountains may fall and the skies will crumble there ain't nothing gonna stand in our way."
I love this thought. It gives me confidence and strength to know that when I stand with God I stand with the creator and ruler of the universe. While, in my humanity, I may be uncertain of the moment the reality is that as long as I'm following God the end result is going to be glorious...even if it's an end result I didn't expect.
There's a terrifying flip side to this coin. What happens to the one who is not on God's side? This passage tells us. And to be honest, it's clear that for some things, death is preferable. It would be better to be dead then to stand against God. It would be better that we had never been born then stand opposed to God's purpose.
His wrath and punishment are fierce. His purpose will not be thwarted. Rather than stand against him it would be better to just get out of his way.
Even if what you're experiencing right now is his wrath, don't fret. The Bible says that God disciplines those He loves. In this passage he makes it clear that these consequences for breaking his rules are reserved for his people, the people whom he loves.
So today - on whose side do you stand? Are you experiencing the favor of God or His wrath? Both are an expression of his love - one is blessing, one is discipline - which you receive is up to you.
