God declared that every fiftieth year should be observed as a year of jubilee - slaves set free, debts cancelled, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no record that the Israelites ever observed this law. Perhaps they simply couldn't believe that it would work. Can you imagine the social and economic impact that would ensue if every debt was cancelled? If our president today ordered this, we would expect to see the total collapse of our nation's economy. Perhaps the Israelites couldn't have faith in God's divine providence; or perhaps those who held slaves and loaned out money were just too politically powerful.
