My Kohen Gadol

By far, the New Testament is the greatest commentary on the Old Testament that exists.

"For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. . . And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was." Hebrews 5:1,4

The role of the "Kohen Gadol" or high priest was meant as a shadow and type of Messiah. Indeed, the whole of the tabernacle was but a shadow of that which is in heaven.

"They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, 'See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.' " Hebrews 8:5

The Lord took great care to describe the high priestly garments in detail. If we look closely, every detail in some way points to Messiah - Jesus.

The high priest was to wear the visual identifications of the people on his garments. He was to bear the judgement of the people over his heart and stand before God as a representative. When the Lord would see this visual identification of the nation and His promises, He would show mercy. This is an amazing picture of Jesus. He is our Kohen Gadol.

"But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent ( not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption." Hebrews 9:11-12

Our high priest represents us before the throne of the Father. Because of Him, the Father shows us grace and mercy.
