In this passage eve visualized what the serpent (Satan) was saying to her about eating from the "off limits" tree. She was the very first human to see "a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 16:24. She looked at the tree and saw:
-"That the tree was good for food" - justifying eating from the tree for a normal everyday personal need, eating food
-"that it was a delight to the eyes" - she was enticed by the beauty of the tree
-"that the tree was to be desired" - the temptation to eat of the tree planted the seed of desire in her heart for the tree
It is the birth of desire in our hearts that leads to death as James 1:14-16 says: "But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."
Originally Adam and Eve were aware of only one truth, and that was the ultimate Truth of God, before sin entered the world. They only had one set of lenses to look through, and those were perfect, pure, and holy.
After sin entered the world, "the eyes of both were opened." What were they opened to, but the sin in their lives. They no longer looked at the world in a holy, pure, and perfect way, they now saw sin and the result of it in their lives.
Following this passage, we see that Adam and Eve were ashamed (hid from God in the garden) and deceptive (Adam blaming Eve and Eve blaming the serpent for deceiving them).
This all leads up to Genesis 3:22, when "Then the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil." Now man had unfortunate ability to discern right and wrong. Unfortunate because it stemmed from the first sin in the Garden of Eden.
