Why In the small voice.
Elijah was a man who called down fire from heaven, and that had even stopped the rain for 3 1/2 years. God gave him authority over nature, and was therefore used to God using him and speaking to him through nature, the things he was used to. But in this season of his life, God wanted to reveal Himself in a way Elijah had yet to experience.
Elijah had just come out of a great victory in his life. He slew all the false prophets of baal, and everything was awesome, but when jezebel threatened his life, he became fearful, so he ran. A man who could call fire from heaven, had a trial.
When theres a trial in your life, a fear has to be dealt with, and the first step is to identify the root, confess it, and cast it out...How? spending time with God.
So God led Elijah into a deeper intimacy and dependancy and spoke to him in a new way. So in the modern application of things, God may have spoken to you in a certain way, but in this season you dont hear God, and the troubles seem to pile up, and you dont find God, you got to seek Him, and wait for the still small voice. Wait for Him in the stillness and queitness and let God speak to you deep in your spirit.
