Use YOUR Uniqueness

When I was a kid, I played a lot of baseball. I played “religiously” from the age of 3, my dad says, until I was a senior in high school. As most kids have, I too had an idol growing up. Someone I wanted to be just like, someday. I collected every baseball card I could get of his, and one season I even wore his number. I idolized Cal Ripken Jr., and wanted to have all of the talents he had, all of the successes he accumulated, his work ethic and whatever else made him the “Iron Man”.
But I was born me, not Cal Ripken Jr. I was born with my own unique talents, my own God given successes, and my own work ethic. Same as you were.
We are uniquely different from one another. And that’s okay. God has made you in all of your uniquenesses to be you, and not a copy of someone else. He illustrated this perfectly with King David. Well, he wasn’t a king yet when this story took place.
Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. ”I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine. -1 Samuel 14:38-40
Give me my rocks.
That’s all David wanted, and that’s all he needed. What Saul wanted him to have and be like, didn’t fit and would have probably enabled him to slay Goliath. We have been created with unique gifts and abilities, but we strive to be like other people. We try to imitate every move, decision, thought, etc. that they make and we miss out on the unique things God has created us to do and be. I am as guilty of this as you are, because it is too easy to copy. But what if we daily said, “God give me MY rocks” and we approached our day to day lives with the uniquenesses we were created to have, and to be?
Are you uniquely you all the time? Have you picked up your rocks today?
