Creating Space

Growing up I shared a room with my older brother. We had bunk beds. Because I was the youngest, I was forced to sleep on the top bunk. I hated sharing a room. I hated not having my own space. I was glad when my parents gave my brother permission to move in the basement. Finally, my own space. There is nothing like having your own space.

As and adult, I've paid attention to space. We've created a living room space, a dinning space, a family gathering space, library space and a studying space for our children. We've created space for those things and activities that we deem important.

In Exodus 26 and 27 God guides Israel through a process of creating space for Him. As you read the chapters, you can't help but notice God's attention to detail. God doesn't want any kind of linen, but fine linen. He doesn't want any clasps, but gold clasps. The curtains are to be made of goat hair. Then make bronze clasps. He is specific about the colors, red, purple and blue. He gives instructions for the use of silver and acacia wood. God is interested in quality. God is interested in detail. Even when they come to the inner and outer courts, God gives specific materials and measurements. All of this is to be done, to create space for God in their midst.

Have you created space for God? For some that may mean a physical space in your home or apartment that is set aside for your time with God. For others that may mean time set aside for God throughout the day. Whichever one you choose, don't haphazardly create space. Pay attention to the quality of the created space. Exodus 26 and 27 makes it clear to us that God is intimately concerned about the space we create for Him in our lives. Do you value God enough today, to create Him some space in your life, on your calendar, and in your home?
