My Life Is Full of Trouble

According to Henry Morris (Treasures of the Psalms), Psalm 88 is unique in that "its complaints are never softened by any note of hope." The author's life is bleak. But, regardless of how bad it is, he does not reject God. He cries to God for salvation -- morning and night.

Notice that the author is preparing to die, without strength, in the darkest depths, under God's wrath, abandoned by his friends, taken captive by enemies, rejected by God. Of whom does this remind us? Perhaps this Psalm foretold the agony of the Christ. Perhaps this Psalm expresses the thoughts of Christ on the cross.

This Psalm reminds us that, regardless of how bleak our circumstance, we should never reject God. Like Job, we can continue to call out to the Lord in prayer day and night -- and wonder why he does not answer! Like Christ, we may go through terrible suffering. But, we remember that "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." (Rom 8:18)
