Confused

I honestly don't understand this passage. In the Message version, it clearly states Jesus said you will know true believers because they will be able to handle snakes and drink poison without getting hurt.

Is this why we hear of the "snake handling" churches? Why would Jesus seem to encourage believers to drink poison to prove their commitment? I'm honestly just really confused.
