Blessings on credit?

I love these first 13 verses of Leviticus 26. It is just such a graphic picture of the great things God does in our lives when we obey Him. A farming community was dependent on the rains, and God promised to send the seasonal rains that were necessary for an abundant harvest (Lev 26:4).

Not only did God promise rains, He also promised security (Lev 26:5-6), victory (Lev 26:7-8) and offspring (Lev 26:9). And beyond all of that, God promised to "live among you, and I will not despise you. I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people" (Lev 26:11-12).

He identified Himself as the God who brought them out of Egypt and broke the yoke of their slavery (Lev 26:13). In other words: His promises are not in vain! God's blessings follow us when we obey Him.

But the story doesn't stop there. In that same chapter more than twice as much verses (Lev 26:14-46) are devoted to all kinds of curses that would fall on the Israelites when they would not obey Him. Apparently, obedience is a serious matter to God.

When you look at all those curses, you may think: why do I see so many who don't obey God, but still prosper? That's the same question Job wanted to see answered.

Could it be that God sometimes gives His blessings on credit? It seems to me like it. When people seem to be blessed in this life, but not living a life of obedience, eternity will catch up with them.

I rather have 70-80 years of difficulty and an eternity of bliss than 70-80 years of apparent blessings and an eternity of torment... What about you?
