Literally Becoming One Flesh
The word used in this case for "one" is the Hebrew word "echad." The word literally means "one," but it carries a plural connotation. It properly implies being united. This is the same word that is used in Deuteronomy 6:4 when we are told that God is "one." It is also the same word used when Jews describe a grape (singular) being used to make a glass of wine, although it takes roughly 100 grapes to make a glass. The grapes are looked upon as on because they are united for a singular purpose.
Modern science has proven this statement to be true. Humans, during sexual contact, become permanently commingled by a process known as Quantum Entanglement (or Subatomic Entanglement or Photon Entanglement). For the sake of others, I will only divulge the matter in a simple (as simple as it can be_ manner. If you have any further interest in the subject of Quantum Entanglement, I would recommend reading "The God Effect" by Brian Clegg, as well as studying the work of Albert Einstein and John Stewart Bell. The work of Einstein was seminal in the early stages of the matter, though the work of Bell was significant in rectifying holes in Einstein's theory.
In its simplest form, Quantum Entanglement is the process by which atoms become entangled on a subatomic level. Certain particles will decay into others. This means that the two become joined to one another for the sake of fulfilling scientific laws of conservation. As a result of this process, the two have become entangled particles which will now mirror each other. To understand this in a very simple form, imagine placing a ball in front of a mirror and then bouncing it up and down. Obviously, the mirror image of the ball will be seen bouncing up and down as well. Now imagine the ball spinning to the right while still in front of the mirror. Though the ball is still properly spinning to the right, the mirror image, of course, will be that of a ball spinning to the left (its own, not yours) in order to imitate the actual ball. Such is the case of entangled particles. In the case of entangled atoms, there are commingled subatomic parts within the two individual holders. In this case, imagine that there are two individuals made up of particles A, B and C, with each individual possessing their own version of A, B and C. When entanglement occurs particle C from Person 1 will leave its original location to join particle C in Person 2. As such, particle B from Person 1 will duplicate itself in order to create a new particle C, while the two particle Cs in Person 2 will unite as a singular unit. At this point, the two individuals are now entangled on a subatomic level. Consequently, these particles are now permanently intertwined, regardless of distance, and will begin to mirror each other in the bodies of persons 1 and 2. As I mentioned previously, the matter as I've discussed it is an extremely simplified version of the act. Quantum Entanglement is a very complicated matter. If your mind is inclined toward such things, I would encourage further research as it is quite fascinating. There are many more applications of Quantum Entanglement including Quantum Teleportation (we have already successfully been able to teleport particles over a distance greater than 10 miles), which allows matter to be teleported from one place to another via the use of light. (This has significant impact on the understanding of how Christ's glorified body, which was still made of flesh, was able to pass through the burial shroud, as well as how He was able to appear to over 500 people in various locations simultaneously, as Quantum Teleportation is also believed to move at a speed greater than that of light.) If your mind is not inclined toward such scientific matters, then I truly hope that I have explained the matter in a simple enough manner so that it is clear to understand.
All of this has been said for this point: Quantum Entanglement occurs during sexual contact between two individuals. There is no currently known limit to the number of particles that may become entangled during sexual acts, so it is very possible that a large number of particles will become entangled. In this case, a husband and wife literally are becoming united, not just by sexual contact, but genetically because of the entanglement of their quantum particles.
What an astounding evidence this is of God's truth to see His word proven several millennia later. Our God is faithful and true. And his divine purpose for marriage is a beautiful and wonderful thing.
