Give Non-Trendy Sacrifices

I am not known to be a trend setter. No one has ever asked me for fashion advice, or noticed me doing something revolutionary, and then copied every move I make.
But, I’ve noticed a new trend in society today. More people are giving. More people are giving sacrifices of their time, talents, and money. I am hearing more people talk about giving and sacrificing stuff, like it’s the latest fall fashion.
I guess my question would be why, and for whom, are we giving and sacrificing for?
This is so the Israelites will bring to the Lord the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the Lord, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. -Leviticus 17:5
Why were the Israelites prohibited from sacrificing outside the tabernacle area?
God had established specific times and places for sacrifices, and each occasion was permeated with symbolism. If people sacrificed on their own, they might easily add to or subtract from God’s laws to fit their own lifestyles.
Many pagan religions allowed every individual priest to set his own rules; God’s command helped the Israelites resist the temptation to follow the pagan pattern. When the Israelites slipped into idolatry, it was because “everyone did as he saw fit”.
We need to move ourselves, and this generation, from the “hip” and personal sacrifices, to what’s commanded of us. I have placed my faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Because of that choice that I have made, I am convicted and compelled to give and sacrifice to what’s commanded of me, and to the things that break the heart of God.
Enough about me, what about you? What do you sacrifice, give? Do you do it for yourself, or for someone, something, else?
