Speak To The Rock!

Scripture: "The Lord said to Moses, "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water our of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink."

Observation: God told Moses to TAKE the staff but to SPEAK to the rock. Moses took the staff as God had commanded, but He spoke to the PEOPLE, not the ROCK and used the staff apart from God's instructions. Here they were, very close to actually entering Canaan. Most of the generation has died that God said would not inherit the Promised Land. Moses is almost there. He has almost done his job. And yet, here he finds himself where the people have gotten to him so much that he disobeys God in the process. The outcome for the people was the same but it was the process of the miracle that caused Moses to lose the promise.

Application: I need to truly listen when God speaks to me. He may be saying a new word that calls for a different action from me than what I am used to. I need to trust in what God is doing and not try to help him out or add a little drama for effect. I need to let it roll off my back when people try to get under my skin. When I honor God with my life in front of the world, the world will see God through me. When I dishonor God, the world sees that as well.

Prayer: Father, you will always prove yourself holy in spite of me, but I never want to miss out on your promises because of strife, anger or quarreling. I want to trust in you enough to follow through with whatever is given me to do and to bring honor and glory to your name through it. Help me to never misuse the tools for ministry that you have given me and may I always trust you enough to honor you as holy, no matter where I am or what I am doing.

Amen
