Stories

The disciples inquire of Jesus: why do you tell stories? His response is priceless. It is an explanation and justification for every writer who has ever published any manuscript. Stories get at truth.

Once upon a time, a writer I know explained something quite subtle, but true, about play writing. He emphasized good plays show the truth versus spelling it out in dialogue. Show it don't say it.

In the same way, Jesus spoke in parables--stories-- to reveal truth to people. And, in his own words, people are "blockheads" (The MSG translation). Their minds are hardened. They cannot receive spiritual insight directly. But, everyone can be seduced by a good story. Everyone recognizes heroes and villains, good and evil, conflict and resolution, the beginning and the end.

Another writer I admire (and have met!), Donald Miller, says humans want to create a better story for themselves. I believe this. Christ-followers understand the Jesus in the plot makes any chapter of any story better, more challenging, more interesting, more fulfilling. He does not have to say a word. He will show the truth.
