Choosing Blessing
Scripture
Today I’m giving you the choice of a blessing or a curse.
Observation
Moses has recounted all the laws and commands the Lord God had given. The laws are given for the good of the people, to live together in a just and caring society.
If the people obey, there is blessing. Their enemies will be driven out before them. There will be rain at the right time and the land will provide much grain, wine and olive oil. There will be grass in the field for their animals. They will be able to eat all they want. This is certainly a desired outcome.
If the people disobey, things will go downhill quickly. There will be no rain. The ground won’t grow crops. They will quickly disappear from this good land. Unpleasant consequences.
Application
The connection of consequence to action isn’t as clear today. Consequences aren’t always immediate. Scientists and researchers of our day look for ways to defer or even avoid consequences for violating God’s laws and principles. We have entire industries devoted to this.
But sooner or later the actions will bear fruit. Indeed, suppressing immediate consequences often leads to greater repercussions later.
I have many choices to make each day, many trivial, some significant and occasionally life changing. Could it be that each one, to a greater or lesser extent, is a choice between a blessing and a curse?
Prayer
Lord, may your Holy Spirit guide me in every decision I make each day. May my choices be increasingly aligned with your principles and your heart.
