This story mesmorized me as a child. I would sit, listening intently, as my dad told the story of an old man, a stinky ship, a disastrous flood, a dove and an olive branch, until he came to, what I thought was, the best part. You know, The Rainbow. The colorful projectile in the sky. The Roy G Biv. Lisa Frank's inspiration. That rainbow. My dad explained that this rainbow was a covenant that God would never flood the earth again, and boy was I relieved. As a child, the thought of having to swim everywhere was quite exhausting! Actually, it still is to me as an adult...
As I hit my teens/ihatetheworld era, I began to question God's love. How is He so loving if He performed such a merciless act? The rainbow became to be a symbol of wrath to me.
I don't think I'd be too far off to say that I am not the only one to have felt that way. At least I hope not... I don't want to be an "individual", really. With that being said, I've come to realize (with some maturity and hard-learned lessons) that this is not a story of wrath at all, it is one of LOVE.
God- The Omipotent, Omipresent, and Omniscient God- He could have easily wiped out the surface of the earth, not sparing ONE soul. Why? Well Genesis explains the Spiritual state of mankind at that time, and let me tell ya, it aint pretty. The wages of sin is death, and sin was all too rampant. Mankind had rejected their Creator, all but one man and his family. This ONE man was Righteous in Gods eyes. And guess what? Proverbs 84:11 states that, "no good thing does He (the Lord) withhold from those whose walk is blameless." God's love spared mankind. His love for Noah, just one righteous man. It amazes me how much the Lord is willing to put up with for one man. Remember Abraham intervening for Sodom & Gomorrah? The Lord said if there was just ONE righteous man in the two cities He'd spare them.
If that's not love, I don't know what is. But get this peeps, the love God had for Noah went a step further. GOD made NOAH a promise. How awesome is that? An all-powerful God promised an all-but-powerful man something. He promised never to flood the earth again. The war between man and God was over. Any animosity that spurred later was a result of man being disobedient to God's commands... but on God's end. The war was over, no more arrows flying or bows to weild.
God relinquished His bow, and placed it in the sky, as a reminder of His promise, and His love, for us- His people.
