Translation "no more"
I don't claim to be a Greek scholar, but the Greek word eisintranslated here as "no more" can also be translated "no longer here." That might make more sense since the passage is referring to Jeremiah 31:15. In that instance, Jeremiah was saying that the children of the people, who had been taken away by conquering nations, would return to Israel. That's much more hopeful than was experienced by the people here whose children were actually killed. The translations who end Matt. 2:18 with the word "dead" seem to be trying to make it fit what just happened, but are ignoring Matthew's statement in verse 17 that this was related to Jeremiah's words.
