You're Not Simply Entitled to Anything
When I read this I see the same kind of attitude that I see today in a lot of younger people and that's an attitude of entitlement. Joshua is dividing up the land and these guys get a portion, but complain because apparently it's not enough for them. So Joshua offers them the hill country too, but they complain because it's a forest and the guys there have iron chariots. To me, that's like complaining about someone giving you a new car and telling you the only thing you need to do is go and pick it up. Joshua didn't tell them they couldn't have more land, but apparently they felt entitled and didn't want to have to work for it.
A lot of what counts as Christianity today seems to follow this pattern. People have financial struggles so they pray for provision but DO NOTHING to change the habits that got them in trouble. People have marital problems and pray for their spouse's heart, but DO NOTHING to work on theirs. Men struggle with lust and ask God to take it away, but DO NOTHING to eliminate it themselves.
We're told that every promise of God is yes in Christ so it's not that God isn't looking out for us and willing to help us. He's just not going to do it all while you sit around and DO NOTHING!
