Do as I Do

Scripture

Imitate me as I imitate Christ.

Observation

Jesus said He could do only what he sees the Father doing. Paul says he imitates Christ. But how? He didn’t journey with Jesus every day for three years as one of the twelve disciples.

Paul did encounter Jesus on the road to Damascus. When Ananias prayed for him, Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit. He was a changed man, immediately spreading the word that Jesus was the Son of God. His life began to imitate Jesus.

Paul encourages the believers at Corinth to imitate him, as he imitates Christ. They were to be Christians, or Christ-like ones, “little Christs”, Christ followers.

Application

The “Christian” community today is often accused of being hypocritical, of saying one thing but living another. Of pointing a finger at those whose lifestyle is offensive, yet hiding their own secret indiscretions.

Actions speak much louder than words. Jesus’ actions illustrated His words, showing us the Father. Paul encouraged the believers to imitate him, not simply follow his teachings. Indeed, his actions backed his words. I too can be so filled with Christ that I imitate Him.

As I go through the day, I can think “What would Jesus do?” regarding each decision so that I would imitate Christ. Another way to think about it could be: “Would I want someone to imitate me?”

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for being an example for me, for showing us the Father. Thank you for the many who follower you well, who have been an example for me. May your Spirit live through me, so I can also be an example for others.
