Without Regrets

Scripture

Teach me, O Lord, about the end of my life. Teach me about the number of days I have left so that I may know how temporary my life is.
Each person who walks around is like a shadow. They are busy for no reason. They accumulate riches without knowing who will get them.
And now, Lord, what am I waiting for? My hope is in you!

Observation

The radio talk show hosts last week were discussing deathbed regrets one day. Their intent was not to be morbid, but to encourage thinking about this in advance, while there is time to change how one lives, to live without regrets.

This was the Psalmist’s wrestle. He had been deep in thought, silent and speechless. He was concerned about his ways so that he would not sin with his tongue. His heart burned like a fire, flaring up within him.

“Teach me about the number of days I have left”, he exclaims to the Lord, “that I may know how temporary my life is.” He recognizes the folly of walking around aimlessly, of being busy, of accumulating riches that will be left to someone else.

“What am I waiting for?” he says. The path to a life without regrets is to put his hope in the Lord.

Application

If I continue the way I am, will I have regrets?

There are so many things vying for my time and attention - things that are urgent, things that keep me busy, things that entertain, things that I must do to earn money to pay the bills, things that result in those bills. It is so easy for my calendar to be filled, squeezing out the things that are truly important.

Life is too short, too precious to leave it to chance. My first priority must be the Lord God. He is the Creator, with wisdom and knowledge far above mine, wisdom He is willing to share with me. He is the one in whom I put my hope and trust, and with whom I need to spend quality time each day. Then everything else can be seen and put in its proper place, and life lived without regrets.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for being with me always, for being find-able when I seek you, for revealing your wisdom and insights when I wait for you. May my hope always be in you. Help me to order my days according to your plan.
