God's View of Money

God's view of money and debt is clearly defined here:

Deut 28:12––It is a sign of blessing to lend.
Deut 28:44––It is a sign of curse to borrow.

God desires his covenant people to be blessed in order to be a blessing, and part of that blessing includes wealth (Deut 8:18, Gen 12:1-3, 2 Cor 9:6-12). Being able to lend and give generously assumes you a superabundance of money––more than enough for your own personal needs. On the flip side, God's view shown here is that being in debt and lack is a curse resulting from sin and broken covenant.

It is a popular teaching in Christianity that it is a blessing to be poor. It sounds noble and self-sacrificing, but is that consistent with God's view of wealth shown here in Deuteronomy 28 and so many other places? No, it's not.

As a matter of fact, believing God wants you to be broke is believing God wants you to be cursed.
