God provided instruction for tithing to His people and explained the principals behind this practice. Tithing was an act of redeeming from the curse of sin, this is without a doubt true but it was much more than that. Tithing was a time of celebration, liberty and blessing. Far from being a burden, tithing was meant to bless the tither and recipient both.
The Israelites were specifically told by God that He did not want the bringing of the tithe to be a burdensome or dreaded thing. God told His people it was perfectly acceptable to exchange their tithe of the fields, herds and flocks for cash so that they could have an easier journey to the place where the offering was to be made. Upon their arrival the people could purchase what their hearts desired and then partake of the tithe as they shared it with others, Jew and non-Jew alike. It was a party atmosphere when the tithe was given. I guess this is why the Lord loves a cheerful giver!
In light of how the Lord instructed His people regarding the tithe, how do we react to the tithe? Do we consider it to be a Joy or a burden. Are we rejoicing at the opportunity to share it with modern day Levites (Church leaders) and strangers (the lost and others in the assembly)? Are we rejoicing as we all partake together in the feast of His Word, Worship and Presence? Is the assembling together with the saints drudgery or a fiesta? I say it is time to party . . . bring in the tithe!
