    Here is a great example of what it means to be the people of God. The children of Israel were busy minding their own business, and receiving God's blessing. This threatened the powers that be, and caused them to bring on the persecution and slavery. This pattern doesn't change much throughout history.     Here a new Pharaoh comes to power, and doesn't know the history of his guests in Egypt. Two peoples who are friendly and support each other (Egypt being a womb or safe place for the children of Israel to grow), become combative and enemies. This scenario is recreated often by the people of God within our churches.     Here Matthew is experiencing the call of Jesus, at work. The difference of his call from the other disciples is his call of leaving privilege. Matthew is asked to leave behind the wealth of shady politics, legal stealing. He is wealthy, with a job that took some "greasing the wheels", and would be tough to come back to later, unlike fishermen. This call seems to speak more to modern American followers.     Here a disciple is willing to follow Jesus at an easy level, walking across the lake. Jesus leads, they follow. When on the other side of the lake, Jesus explains the next place to follow Him. This principle is that when following Jesus, the agenda is ALWAYS set by Jesus. A teacher of the law is willing to follow wherever Jesus goes.     A disciple doesn't just reorient their work life to follow Jesus, it changes their relationships as well. These followers didn't just leave their identity, which was their work, but they left behind their father (family) to pursue walking with Jesus. A disciple radically rewires their connections, every relationship they have becomes adjusted through the filter of Christ and their relationship with Him. Read more »
