As another contributor has already pointed out, these people voluntarily sold things for the benefit of the group; they were not forced to sell them and the proceeds of the sales were not confiscated by the apostles. The Word is comforting, even in passages such as this that seem to be completely contrary to the image that the world has of Jesus and of Christians. I've been struggling with depression and many of the things associated with a mid-life crisis (self-doubt, worthlessness, lack of meaning, desire to define myself through things, etc.), and on top of that, my wife just had her second consecutive miscarriage.
