eressea added a text contribution Re: Is this a prophesy?I am taught that a prophesy often is two-sided :) At first, the prophesy is relevant for the person, this is called in my language "obvious/upper layer", and there is often a second layer, that is universal and for the future. For example the prophesy of the virgin birth, which is originally for the Jewish king back then, but also a sign of Jesus birth. This is quite common. So, I think David didn't know he was prophesying about Jesus, that he did feel that at the moment, but beca… Read more »

eressea added a text contribution Background on MatthewA few notes from a few lectures on my seminary school on Matthew. I'm Dutch, so please excuse any spelling errors: Matthew is the only that speaks about "the kingsdom of heaven". The other gospels all speak about "the kingdom of God". This gospel is written especially for the Jews, you can see that for example Jewish rituals aren't explained. The learnings are in thematical order. The central theme is "The kingdom of heaven": 1-2: birth 3-4 John the Bap… Read more »

Laodicea is together with Ephesus the only community that's mentioned in the New Testament (Col. 2:1 and 4:13-16). This city is known for famous black whool ("i will give you white clothes" verse 18) ,embroided robes and a medicine for eyes, called Frygic Powder (see verse 18 also). She was a very arrogant town, when she had an earthquake, the habitants built up their own city, and refused all help! Oh, and this city also contained hot and cold wells, which were used as some kind… Read more »

eressea added a text contribution PhiladelphiaPhiladelphia literally means "brother love". It was no city of itself, but fell under Sardes (it was named after the founder Attalus Philadelphus). This is the only city where there is still a christian community!! Though poor, persecutions have not fallen unto her, she even became a refugee for persecuted christians. Now it is called Alaser, which means "City of God", as is literally predicted in verse 12!! (though there is a spiritual meaning, also, as is with most prophesi… Read more »

Sardes was the old capital of Lydia and the residence of the fabulous rich king Croesus (probably differently spelled in English, sorry for that), who had made the first money ever. It was a trading city, it lies on a crosspoint of roads. In this town there were a lot of people that believed in the mysterie religions, like Kybele (also known as Magna Mater - Great Mother). Sardes (Turkish: Sefarad, Perzic: Sparda) means "remnant/rest", a handful of survivors, that escaped something. Th… Read more »

eressea added a image contribution Ephesus Ruins a la 2005I've been to Ephesus in 2005. This is a picture of the general way, you can see the library up ahead. It's not sure that this is the Ephesus that Paul and others have been, because it has been destroyed and rebuilt a few times. Ephesus was known as a harbortown, and also known for it's temple (who is one of the 7 world miracles) to the goddess Artemis. Read more »

The doctrine of Balaam mostly contains the connection between Jew and Heathen --- Balaam faked friendshap with the Jews and through the friendshap (read in this context: with the world) ) he made them commit prostitution. This stands in spiritual sense for the friendshap with the world, instead of close relationship with God and looking to the next world. Read more »

Thyatira means literally - City under Tya. she was a Mary-like type, a bridge between the gods and the people ("the queen of heaven"). This passage also refers to the church period of 606-1520, when the christian world was under catholicism (Mary!). It was very known for charity etc. Though the works that are spoken of here are not only good works like charity, but it also means rituals and sacraments etc, who had come instead of the simplicity of faith. Jezebel is a false prophet, s… Read more »

There are two meanings for Pergamos, the first is Stronghold-Marriage. That is symbolic for this part of history of the church (313-606) and can be defined with "the church and the king mixed". Christianity became a state religion, the teaching of the Nicolaits were introduced (see my comment at Rev. 2:6). The second meaning is "parchment", which stands for the huge library that was located there (well known because the Septuaginta was made there by Jews!). There was also a h… Read more »

Smyrna is now known under the name "Izmir". Smyrna was very known for their perfumes and scents. Smyrna means a few things... At first it means myrrh, used for perfume. But the meaning of Myrrh is at the first place "persecution" or "bitterness". It's a bit like this passage says... There is a lot of persecution, but it also gives off a "lovely scent" for God, because they stand fast (see Rev. 8:3-5). Smyrna means also pseudo, which stands for the… Read more »

The works of the Nicolaits: that means that there is a distinction between the normal people and the "priests". It also stands for a hierarchy in the church (like Pope - Cardinals - priests - people). God finds all equal, and all holy. By the way, when we go through with that conclusion, one can even find that the form of a reverend is also a form of Nicolaits. Notice also the meaning of Nicollaits, it comes from Niko Laos, which means "to conquer the people". It is not a chr… Read more »

Ephesus literally means: to abandon. It's a harbortown in the west of Turkey. It stands for the first period in the history of the church, the years 70-170. It's the second generation that has lost (or read: abandon ;)) love. The first generation of the apostles was over, and the fall of Jerusalem had just come. Read more »
