I can totally see Jesus and the disciples and all the people on the mountain that Jesus is talking to thinking back to this part in their history. As Jesus is calling them out to be "Salt" in the world mental pictures must have swarmed to Elisha purifying this body of water with a bowl of mere salt so it could once again bare life. I'm reminded of Jonah after he gave his message of repentance to the people of Ninevah and saw huge numbers repent and come to faith in God. As far as we know it's his greatest moment in the eyes of God, and most followers of Jesus as well, and he crawls up under a plant and complains that God didn't destroy them like he said he would.
