joewulf added a link contribution New Creation in the FloodMaking my way through Genesis, I could not help but notice the similarity between Creation account in Genesis 1-2 and the proceedings surrounding the Flood in chapters 7-8. The animals in Genesis 7:15 come to Noah to be brought in to the ark, similary to their coming to Adam to be named in Genesis 2:20. Genesis 7:23 tells of the destruction of “people, animals, creatures that creep along the ground, and birds of the sky”–reversing the order given in the earlier creation account of Genesis 1… Read more »

joewulf added a link contribution Elisha, Elijah and Entering the LandReading in the beginning of II Kings, I noticed this pattern: Elijah, on his way out of the land goes from Gilgal to Bethel (II Kings 2:1-2), Bethel to Jericho (II Kings 2:4), Jericho to cross the Jordan (II Kings 2:6). Elisha, on his way back in to the land, goes across the Jordan (II Kings 2:13) to Jericho (II Kings 2:18), Jericho to Bethel (II Kings 2:23), Bethel to Samaria vis Mt. Carmel (2:25). The Israelites, on their way in to the land, go across the Jordan (Josh 3:1ff), battle at… Read more »

joewulf added a link contribution Time Travel in Genesisomewhat keyed off of Cam’s observations with Joe in Chronicles, I thought I’d throw in something I noticed in Genesis. The text is Genesis 14:14. The context is the beginning of the Abrahamic covenant (Gen. 12:1-9), Abraham’s apparent disobedient journey into Egypt (Gen. 12:10-20, note God’s silence, and Ishmael’s Egyptian mother Hagar), his seperation from Lot (Gen 13), Lot’s capture, Abraham’s intervention and the defeat of his enemies, including the incident with Melchizedek (Gen 14). In… Read more »

joewulf added a link contribution Genesis LayoutIn my study this morning I went through Genesis noting all of the “This is the account/genealogy of ______”s in the book. My read (and a pretty obvious one I think) is that this common refrain throughout the book establishes the basic outline of the book, with chapter 1-2:3 forming a sort of introduction or prologue (I have yet to decide which). Here is the breakdown according to the accounts/genealogies of the book: Read more »

joewulf added a link contribution Chiasm in Philemon?Having just finished my read through of Genesis (I know you can’t tell by looking at my posts), I decided to camp out in the little book of Philemon. After reading it through a couple of times, I have begun to question: Has Paul built this letter into a chiasm? Here is what I’ve found (if in fact it is actually in the text)... Read more »

joewulf added a text contribution Rethinking Romans 12:1Just this last week I heard a message on Romans 12:1 that has me re-approaching the passage. As it is typically taught (or at least as I have heard it typically taught), the teacher told us about being a living sacrifice and how living sacrifices tend to get off of the altar. He went on to tell us about the fact that because of all that precedes (Romans 1-11) we are to now present our bodies as living sacrifices in a way that is holy and pleasing to God. As the teacher was laying out his r… Read more »
