He begged His Dad to keep Him from this trial of faith and test of love. It would be difficult--indeed more difficult than anything Jesus had ever done. Jesus teaching in this prayer is remarkably simple. "God is like a good friend," Jesus says. "Better yet, he is like a great Dad. You can talk to Him about anything. But his anchor is the transcendant goodness of God. His doubts arise out of observing a seeming paradox: the wicked prosper. His distant sins with Bathsheba and more recent sin against his daughter have resulted in Absalom's rebellion. He can find life in nothing. All seems lost. But he thirsts for the One and Only. David will only be satisfied with Him. To see Him in all His glory is David's heart. To see the Lord "whose love is better than life" is David's desire. Read more »
