July and August have been such cruel months. "Growing in prayer". There is strength in praying out God's promises, and standing secure in God's assurances. Jacob prays in v.9: "Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'". I need to recount God's blessings in my life - and all the times He has sovereignly guided me. And… Read more »

Jesus addresses the unbelief of the Jews, their accusation of blasphemy (Jesus declaring himself - a human being in their eyes - as son of God). vv.37-38 speaks powerfully: 37 Don't believe me unless I carry out my Father's work.38 But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don't believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father. As we've been covering the book of James in chur… Read more »

An affirmation that God's promises never fail. God promises Abraham that his descendants will number like dust of the earth - countless! And that he will be father of many nations. And yet, few chapters down, we see Abraham and Sarah doubting God's promise. Limiting God to our human circumstances, we fail to see that God's ways are higher than ours. I find myself doubting God - not trusting Him with this coming year. I know it up in the head (knowledge), but I do not have the wis… Read more »

God's Word never changes. God's laws and commands are perfect and whole. Approaching God's word with delight, anticipation and hunger. Meditating, obeying. This seems to be the theme in this season of my life - obedience, more obedience and more obedience! God, I pray that You'll continue breaking me, and molding me. I pray that the hunger for Your word, and the desire to know Your will and OBEY will continue growing as I continue maturing in my faith. Read more »

Faith that works #1: Persevering faith p.Andrew Overview of James: - written by James, brother of Jesus, leader of Jerusalem church - written for overall purpose to nurture genuine faith worked out in real-life situations The 1 thing: Trials are opportunities for faith to be fortified. Deut 5 (v.23-33): Moses stands between God and the Israelites, relaying God's message for the people. The people were afraid to be in direct communication with God, and they asked Moses to pass on the message instead. This reflects the scene in the temple in the Old Testament. People brought their sacrifices to the priest, who would then offer them to God on their behalf. Praise God we now can approach God with confidence, because Jesus has become our bridge in the gap! We now live in a per… Read more »

Deut 4 - (v.1-2): God commands us to listen, then obey. We can only obey when we know what's God's will; what's on God's heart. We shouldn't "add/subtract" anything from His commands; learning to strip away the excuses, compromises. And coming to terms with the ugliness of our heart, and acknowledging that there are deeper heart issues lurking beneath the "excuses", and being willing to deal with them. - (v.15): concerning making idols; God's f… Read more »

All the believers were meeting in one place (v.1): obedience to Jesus' command in Acts 1:8. Matt 18:20 says when two or three believers are gathered in His name, He is in the midst. The start of house churches? Similarly, in Acts 12:12, you find believers gathered in someone's house to pray for Peter (who was imprisoned by Herod). Gathering together in one place is not just significant in the "physical" sense (in that people are all in one place), but it also implies they are… Read more »

Obedience is not the end of all things. Rather, through obedience, I have to learn to turn away from my selfish ways, take up my cross daily (v.23). What matters is whether I have the conviction to follow through. Am I ready to give up my life for God's sake (v.25)? Am I ashamed of the gospel (v.26)? Read more »

God heals - not just physical illness, but also rescues us from spiritual death. Jesus instructs His disciples to do two things (v.2): sharing of the gospel, and healing the sick. Jesus' ministry also involves this same two things: teaching about the Kingdom of God, and healing the sick. God the provider (v.3). In my journey, I won't need walking stick (relying on something else besides God to guide my path ahead), bag (holding onto/storing things), food, money, change of clothes. The… Read more »

Not judging by appearance. We are all also like John the Baptist in some way, since we are all preparing God's way.. sort of. Sharing the gospel, and bringing people to Christ, and reaching out to the nations, and preparing the creation for Jesus' second coming. Am I doing my part? God values childlike faith. He does not work just because a person "deserves" something (v.4), nor does he work just because of the urgency of the situation (v.2). But many a times, I demand God to work in certain areas of my life because I feel like I have a right to. My faith is not "childlike"; it is riddled with human calculation, doubt and cynicism. Humbling myself in acknowledging that I'm not worthy to come before God (v.7), and surrendering my plans and agenda… Read more »

God does not need reminders. So it is interesting how this is repeated in vv. 15-16. Nevertheless, rainbow has become a personal symbol of divine promises faithfully kept. Rainbows serve as reminders of God's faithfulness in my life. (A totally irrelevant and completely wrong thought off the tangent: Perhaps the cloudy months in wintry Michigan - I haven't seen any rainbows in the last 3 years I've been here - have something to do with the fact that it becomes increasingly tough t… Read more »

God asks us to be accountable for the "life" of our "fellow man". This is in stark contrast to Cain's attitude when asked by God about Abel: "Am I my brother's keeper?". While this concept of accountability, or "accounting for fellow man", refer to physical life, it can also be extrapolated to us being accountable for one another's spiritual life too. God is a God of accountability. Accountability is founded on belonging within a community,… Read more »
