mikehaskew added a text contribution God of the LordIt rocked my world when I saw these two terms used to refer to different persons. I always assumed they were interchangeable terms, but seeing the Father's interaction with the Son explicitly expressed in Scripture stirs my soul, and expands my view of the Lord. He is mighty, He is three in one. Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Glorious JesusThis is the Jesus we see and worship now. He's no longer veiled as He was on earth. He's not our buddy who's just like us, his face shines like the sun, and his clothes are white as light. His glory is terrifying and wonderful, weighing us down when we behold it. His glory demands our worship. Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution SelahThis is a beautiful word that doesn't actually have an exact definition. Its context is powerful, used often throughout the Psalms, denoting a pause, a time of reflection and rest, usually in a passage in which the emotion of the writer is too great to continue without time to pause and recover. The Psalmist here is a man physically weighed down by his sin and his need for repentance and restoration. He is so heavily burdened, I can picture him on his hands and knees, crawling toward the… Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Jacob Much?Pretty amazing to read this after reading Gen. 27, Jacob's great sin. He is in such need of this, his soul would cry out with this need for restoration for a long time to come. Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Web of LiesI can't imagine the war in Jacob's soul in this moment. He's doing an unbelievably sinful and deceitful thing, lying to his father to steal his older brother's birthright. He knew the brevity of what he was doing, and while he was encouraged by his mother to do so, it's his responsibility for carrying it out. He was given multiple opportunities to come clean and admit what he was doing, but he lies more at each turn, digging deeper and deceiving more. He must have be… Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Broken PeopleIt's sadly comforting to read these histories of our ancestors. My first thought is that I'm always taken aback by the sin of our forefathers. Based solely on their position, they seem to be towering, godly figures to follow and admire. Yet here is Rebekah, the mother of Israel, God's chosen people, who is a deceitful liar. She tricks her husband into blessing the second born. She's fulfilling the prophecy of "the older serving the younger," but did it have to… Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Two SonsI only recently read this verse for the first time. I had always assumed that after Ishmael and his mother are cast out, his story leaves the biblical narrative. I think it's a profound thought, especially with the current conflict in Gaza, to remember that Isaac and Ishmael came together to bury their father, Abraham. One cursed, one blessed, but still brothers who came together at one time. Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution My RighteousnessIt seems presumptuous, and honestly inaccurate for the Psalmist to claim his salvation on the basis of [his] righteousness. We know that no one is good, and on this basis, I feel a hopeless, disqualified from the help of the Lord because my hands are not clean. But verse 32 makes all the difference. God made my way blameless. He gives me strength and sets me secure on the heights. We need to be blameless, to have clean hands, but we can only be blameless if the blameless one makes us that w… Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Overwhelming PosessionsThere's a lot to be gleaned from this phrase, "for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together." That condemns me as an American in a lot of ways. How do your possessions prevent community in your life? Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution Nothing HiddenThis verse is like watching the hero in a movie defeat the bad guys. It's so exciting, I want to get up and cheer for the mighty power of Jesus! Then, I realize that He knows my thoughts just as well, and I don't always guard my mind with the diligence that would come with the constant understanding that He knows me and is with me. Nothing is hidden from the light of the Lord. Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution No Easy WayThis is a truth that religious folk seem to miss. Why do we assume that being "in the club" means passage to heaven? I can't imagine the crowd's reaction to this teaching. Here is the long-awaited Jewish Messiah telling the people that many Jews will not see heaven, while many outsiders will. Wow. The same goes for us. Attending church, even pastoring a church is no guarantee. We are not privileged, but must bear much fruit, every one of us. In John 15, Jesus makes it… Read more »

mikehaskew added a text contribution The Lord is my good16:2 is a passage that almost perfectly sums up our right mindset as followers of Jesus. If we could set our minds fully on the fact that we have no good apart from Him, nothing else would hinder us. How beautiful, simple, and joyous a thought it is. My need for more time spent on this focus already shows itself as I read 16:6. As I agree that "the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places," my thoughts first turn to my life circumstances, my job, my wife, our home, etc. Those t… Read more »
