stevenjmchenry added a link contribution The Companion Bible Appendix # 74 - The Book of Proverbs: Introduction and AnalysisThe Book of Proverbs is generally described as belonging to a branch of Hebrew literature which has for its subject Wisdom, or, as we should say, Philosophy. This view has some truth in it; but it does not express the whole truth, as will appear from an analysis of the book, and a careful examination of its constituent parts... stevenjmchenry added a link contribution Companion Bible Appendix # 12 - "The Stars also" (Gen. 1:16)In the first mention of the heavenly bodies, the purpose of the Creator is clearly stated. Gen. 1:14-19 reveals the fact that they were created, not only "to divide the day from the night, and to give light upon the earth"; but, they were set "for SIGNS, and for SEASONS, and for days and years". stevenjmchenry added a link contribution What is Jesus specifically referring to here?I tend to agree with this interpretation, from Pastor Chuck Smith's Commentary on Matthew 7, which I have linked to: Jesus is saying basically that we are not to condemn but we are to discriminate. Condemnation is something that God has reserved for himself. God is the final judge. It's not up to me to say that a brother is condemned or that a brother is damned. That's something that is in God's hands. God reserves final judgment for Himself but it is something that I'm… Read more »

stevenjmchenry added a link contribution What poet is Paul quoting? In Act 17:28, Paul is quoting a poem by the Greek poet Aratus, called "Divine Signs." This is from the book, "God's Voice in the Stars" by Kenneth C. Fleming (page 41), which I have included a link to. This is also mentioned in the margin notes of the Companion Bible. stevenjmchenry added a link contribution Response to jcsieben, "Where is the Apocrypha?"The Apocrypha were removed from the Protestant Bible by the British and American Bible Societies in the 1800s, because they felt that these books were not inspired Scripture. They can still be found in Catholic Bibles, and a few Protestant volumes, such as the New English Bible. I have included a link to Edgar Goodspeed's translation of the Apocrypha, which is considered to be one of the best. It includes an extra portion of 2nd Esdras that is not found in most versions of the Apocrypha. C… Read more »

stevenjmchenry added a link contribution When was Jesus born? Luke 1:5 - 2:20I feel that it is important to look in to the question of when Jesus was really born. Was it December 25th, or was it late September, or perhaps some other time of year? The Companion Bible Appendix 179 deals with this question. It is divided into three parts, with the third part, "The Course of Abia" being the most crucial. A careful study of this subject will reveal some surprising things that you may not have been aware of. Contact: E mail: stevenjmchenry@yahoo.com Twitter: http://… Read more »

stevenjmchenry added a link contribution What was Cain's mark? Some racists have postulated that the mark that God put on Cain, was to make his skin dark. I have also heard just the opposite, that the mark was to give him white skin. This would probably make some of the good ole boy "Bible scholars" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, roll over in their graves. I'm including a link to a Wikipedia article that, as we know, is not a source of definitive information, but it does bring together most of the interpretations of this subject,… Read more »

stevenjmchenry added a link contribution Gallows, in the Book of Esther, was probably not the same as we define it today. This was most likely different than what we think of today as a gallows. The Companion Bible margin defines gallows as a tree, or a stake to which a criminal was fastened till he died. The same word for cross. Compare with Esther 2:23, 7:9, Acts 5:30, 10:39, 13:29, and 1 Peter 2:24. I have also included a link for further word study.
