tpmorgan added a text contribution Drifting
I think it's interesting that this verse talks about a "drift toward evil." I've seen this in my own life. When I drift, my words and actions tend not to be pleasing to God. When I remain disciplined, however, my focus and my actions tend to reflect God's purposes for my life. It's a challenging question. Am I drifting? Or am I disciplined? Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Work & Rest
For those of us in leadership, this verse should challenge how we invest our time and the standards we establish for those who work for us. Clearly, our walk with Christ and our trust in his provision is supposed to provide adequate rest. When we don't trust who God is, though, we begin to believe the lie that we need to work harder, longer and so do those who we employ. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution As the Lord Commanded
Moses was a great leader that followed a simple formula: He listened to God. Then he did what God said to do. Listen to God. Do what he says. Listen to God. Do what he says. Of course, it's hard to do what God wants us to do if we don't listen to God. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Sin is sin...sort of
All sin is sin. However, it's clear from Scripture that some sins lead to different consequences. We can still be forgiven, but ultimately we may still live with the consequences of our sin. Sexual sin is like that. This passage makes it clear that there are unique consequences to sexual sin. "No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does." Read more »

I love this attribute of God. He's jealous about his relationship with me. How many times, though, do I put other relationships, commitments, priorities ahead of him? Read more »

Why is it that sometimes Jesus encouraged people to tell others about their healing and other times he told them to stay quiet? Read more »

Moses listened to God. Moses did what God told him to do. Moses said what God told him to say. That's the key to church growth. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Sharing Stories
I love watching the relationship between Moses and Jethro. It appears that they had a special bond. Moses models the importance of sharing stories. He tells Jethro about all the amazing things God has done for the people of Israel. There is certainly power in story telling. It helps others here about God's impact on our lives. And, it's an opportunity to bring praise and worship to God. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Which Staff? :-)
How staffs did Moses have that God had to clarify which staff he was talking about? I can just picturing Moses responding, "Oh, you mean the staff I used to strike the water of the Nile. Now I know which one you're talking about." Sorry, that just struck me funny. Read more »

That's how long it took the people of Israel to forget that God was God. How often do I forget the miracles God has performed in my life in the past, when I face a present crisis? Read more »

From this passage, it seems pretty clear to me that God gives each of us unique spiritual gifts. And, with that in mind, it is pointless for us to all pursue the same gift. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Wait Quietly
Too often, I think I fall into the trap of wanting to talk to God. That's pretty silly. Why would I be concerned about saying anything when he's ready to talk to me. I'm too impatient and prideful to wait quietly for God to speak in my life. I'm guessing my version of prayer gets in the way of God working in my life. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Old Guys
One of the things that has always intrigued me is how old Moses and Aaron were before they responded to this calling from God. I'm more inclined to want direction immediately. My nature isn't to wait. Sometimes, though, God's plans aren't revealed immediately. I still need to be disciplined and dependent on him today, so that I'm ready to respond when he reveals his direction. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Tough Times
This is a good reminder that just because we are experiencing difficult times doesn't mean God isn't with us or doesn't love us. It's dangerous to think that when times are good, God is rewarding us for something we've done. Likewise, it's just as dangerous to assume that when times are bad we are being punished for something we have done. Nothing, good or bad, can separate us from God. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Hardened Hearts
Verses like this scare me. God is mercy. But God is also just. If we turn our back form him, ultimately he may choose to harden our hearts just like he did Pharaoh's. What's my heart condition? Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Leadership Humility
When I've read this passage in the past, I've looked at it as if Moses was lacking faith. That may be true, but I'm wondering if this is actually a great representation of who God chooses for leadership roles. He wants people who acknowledge that they are nothing without God's power in their lives. Had Moses demonstrated confidence, I don't know if God would have chosen him. My guess is God selects and then chooses to bless leaders the same way today. Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Our Legacy
If anyone should have a legacy in life apart, it should have been Joseph. His strategic initiatives and leadership saved the nation of Egypt. Yet, as this verse points out, the king of Egypt "knew nothing about Jospeh or what he had done." What a great reminder that, apart from Jesus, we are really nothing. Everything we do, everything we accumulate, everything we write or say is going to vanish some day. It will be forgotten. The only thing that will be eternal will be the Kingdom of… Read more »

I'm pretty sure God waited until Moses was 80 to lead the people out of Egypt. In this case he chose a 30-year-old man to lead. What am I doing to position the next generation of leaders? Am I willing to let them lead? (I need to.) Read more »

tpmorgan added a text contribution Taking Action
So many lessons in this parable. God doesn't give the same gifts to everyone. God rewards people differently. The biggest lesson, though, seems to be that we're called to take action with the gifts God provides. We can't sit and wait for God to move. He's calling us to move. The riskiest option is to do nothing. Read more »
