Luke 18:18-26
===============
Luke 18:18-26 (HCSB)
---------------
A ruler asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
"Why do you call Me good?" Jesus asked him. "No one is good but One-God. You know the commandments:

Do not commit adultery;

do not murder;

do not steal;

do not bear false witness;

honor your father and mother."

"I have kept all these from my youth," he said.
When Jesus heard this, He told him, "You still lack one thing: Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me."
After he heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich.
Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."
Those who heard this asked, "Then who can be saved?"

He asks the right question
===============
Luke 18:18 (HCSB)
---------------
A ruler asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Eternal life
===============
John 17:3 (HCSB)
---------------
This is eternal life:

that they may know You, the only true God,

and the One You have sent-Jesus Christ.

Eternal Life is..
===============
...to Know God (not know about God)...eternal life is to fellowship with God.

He asks about the right subject
===============
The subject = eternal life.

He asks the right person
===============
He came straight to the source: Jesus Christ.

"Good"
===============
The word Good used in vs. 18 was usually reserved for God.

1 Chronicles 16:34
===============
1 Chronicles 16:34 (HCSB)
---------------
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 34:8
===============
Psalm 34:8 (HCSB)
---------------
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
How happy is the man who takes refuge in Him!

Nahum 1:7
===============
Nahum 1:7 (HCSB)
---------------
The Lord is good,
a stronghold in a day of distress;
He cares for those who take refuge in Him.

Wrong Source = Wrong Answer
===============
Acts 4:12 (HCSB)
---------------
There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people, and we must be saved by it."

Demands of Jesus
===============
One of the things we have learned about Jesus as we have studied His life together through the pages of Luke is that the REAL Jesus makes demands of His followers.

Wrong Assumption #1
===============
"Christianity is something you can add." Rather: Christianity is not something you add. Christianity is an explosion that destroys everything you have to make way for something new!

Christianity is a revolution
===============
"You need to be born again" "You need an entirely new life!"

Wrong Assumption #2
===============
"Christianity is something you do.

"Bad News" before "Good News"
===============
In order for a person to see their need for grace, they must understand they have no chance of keeping the Law. The Law was never meant to bring salvation. The Law is intended to demonstrate our need for salvation.

Philippians 3:4-6
===============
Philippians 3:4-6 (HCSB)
---------------
although I once also had confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised the eighth day; of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; regarding the law, a Pharisee; regarding zeal, persecuting the church; regarding the righteousness that is in the law, blameless.

Romans 3:20
===============
Romans 3:20 (HCSB)
---------------
For no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin [comes] through the law.

Romans 7:7
===============
Romans 7:7 (HCSB)
---------------
What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

Salvation =
===============
Salvation only comes through complete abandonment to Jesus Christ.

Went away sad...
===============
Vs. 23 says the man went away sad. He rejects Jesus because he would rather have his money. If following Jesus meant adding to his to-do list he was for it, but completely abandoning everything for Jesus...he was not willing.

Relationships?
===============
Luke 14:25-27 (HCSB)
---------------
Now great crowds were traveling with Him. So He turned and said to them: "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, and even his own life-he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Half-hearted followers?
===============
Luke 14:33 (HCSB)
---------------
In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not say good-bye to all his possessions cannot be My disciple.

More than you can imagine
===============
Salvation demands more than you thought, but it offers more than you can imagine.

Who can be saved?
===============
The one who comes to Jesus completely abandoning everything to follow Him.

Matthew 13:44-46
===============
Matthew 13:44-46 (HCSB)
---------------
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he found one priceless pearl, he went and sold everything he had, and bought it.
