One of the most amazing accounts I ever heard in the old testament is about a disobedient prophet of the Lord. He is riding his animal away from where God wants him to go, when the animal becomes stubborn and begins to resist. The prophet steadily whips the animal until God opens the animal's tongue! The creature calls the prophet out, asking why the property is beating him when he knows they aren't supposed to be going that way. Perhaps what is even more astounding is that he converses with the animal trying to justify himself. An angel gets involved and it's rather an excited ending! So, if God wills it, animals can talk.
